About Our Members Area
SaveTheRange.com's Members Section
You’ve requested access to information that is stored in our Members Area. We recently changed the way our site works to put information that is of interest only to CDG members and Criswell landowners in a private section here. Our members section contains our latest newsletter and newsletter archive, more (and larger) photos plus detailed Criswell Maps showing some of the main roads. If we get our way, it will soon contain videos and maps showing historic Criswell roads too. To access our Members Area, you need a username and password which is available to dues-paying members and Cattleguard Subscribers.
A CDG membership still costs just $25 per year and that includes a Cattleguard subscription. We think that’s quite a bargain and hope you’ll agree. If you want a better deal, we offer a 3-year subscription for $69.95 or a 5-year subscription for $109.95.
Beginning in 2008, Cattleguard will only be available through this site and possibly (we're not promising yet) via email. We’re considering whether to continue offering a snail-mailed version of Cattleguard at a higher price to help pay rising postage and printing bills. But as it stands, we plan to stop snail-mailing Cattleguard altogether and make it available only on the web or via email.
CDG is a non-profit organization. That doesn’t mean we’re rolling in dough. We’re not the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It means our goal is to provide information and services that are useful and valuable to our members; but not necessarily to make a profit in doing that. Although our goal is not profit, that doesn’t mean we intend to lose our shirts doing what we do either.
We’re sure you know the things we do to support Criswell landowners take time, money and effort. For example, in 2007, we invested nearly $2,000 to redesign, rebuild and host this site. We know you’ve noticed the changes because our traffic has grown and we’ve had lots of positive feedback about the progress we’ve made.
This site isn’t our only ongoing expense. It’s not even the biggest one. CDG has also bought several pieces of earthmoving equipment including a grader, a dozer, a specially-built trailer designed to deliver full cabin kits to the Criswell in one trip, and this winter we’ve worked on creating a pick-up-mounted backhoe that will enable us to do serious digging in some of the more isolated parts of the Criswell.
Each time we produce and distribute Cattleguard it takes dozens of hours of work to put the new edition together and hundreds of dollars in paper, ink and postage costs (not to mention the cost of gas to drive the 120 mile round-trip to Socorro to buy those supplies) to print and mail the darn thing.
The fact is we would never have been able to continue this work as long as we have if it wasn’t for the support and encouragement of a few loyal friends and CDG members – including the folks at SWARMCO and the members of our Old West Park – who’ve encouraged our work for years. We’re very grateful to our friends for your assistance. Thank you so much!
Sadly there are still many who visit this site or receive our mailings that have never opened their wallets or lifted a finger to support our work. So in 2008 we decided one thing we can do to raise money is encourage our web visitors to help pay the bills.
That’s why Cattleguard and other materials that are of interest primarily to Criswell landowners or investors and park members have been moved to our Members Area. If you own land on the Criswell or are a member of our Old West Park we assume you know why what CDG does is valuable to you. We won’t belabor that point here.
What we will say is we’ve reached the point where we need your help. Our goals for the next few years include construction and improvement of key roads into the Criswell and expansion of the Criswell’s roads network. We hope to do this in cooperation with landowners and park members who are willing to help defray the cost of getting better road and driveway access to their land.
That's why we spent many hours this year refining our ability to identify and map existing Criswell roads and to layout and construct new ones. Clearly road mapping, construction and maintenance will be an ongoing effort for many years.
This year and next we hope to create a more navigable road into Old West Park. Our goal is to provide reliable access to the park for campers, RVs and vehicles pulling trailers. That project requires lots of labor, fuel and material costs. We may even need to acquire an easement through BLM land. If that is necessary, we’ll need to prepare a proposal and land use impact statements. That means we’ll need the help of attorneys and engineers and they don’t work for free.
You get the point. All these things cost money. That’s why we need your help.
That brings us back to the Members Area on this site…
A CDG Membership and Cattleguard subscription costs $25 a year. It gives you access to our latest news and updates. If we’re lucky it may also make this site a revenue producer for CDG rather than a cost center. Since we launched this site last year, it has produced a few hundred dollars in much-needed cash. We want to encourage that trend. Frankly, we’d like to make the site self-supporting and thus eliminate the cost of producing Cattleguard from our budget.
You can help us achieve that goal. Here’s how...
